Abstract Sea

The sea is always a constant source of inspiration. I never use a tripod for waves as one is constantly panning, searching out shapes and textures in an ever-changing seascape. No two patterns are the same, with currents, reflections and the underlying seabed coming into play. Camera movement and slow shutter speeds can be used add texture and movement to a relatively calm sea, whilst directly oncoming waves, which can at times seem relatively static in nature, can be given sideways directional movement. Often, some of the best wave formation may only occupy less than a quarter of the frame but still contains enough information for a powerful print. To be successful, it's important to stand back and study the water and look for form and patterns within it, even if the repetition is sporadic at best.
